Baked Spaghetti

I’ve heard of baked spaghetti and have seen recipes floating around the internet at some of my favorite recipe sites, such as this recipe from Calliko at AllRecipes. Tonight, I took that recipe and made a few changes and called it supper.  It was pretty good!  Everyone had seconds.

Ingredients:

8 ounces uncooked spaghetti

1/2 pound ground beef (85/15)

16 ounces meatless spaghetti sauce – I used Prego Roasted Garlic and Herb

1/4 tsp. seasoned salt

1 egg

3 tbsp. Parmesan cheese

3 tbsp. butter, softened

1 cup ricotta cheese

16 oz. mozzarella cheese, fresh

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F

Spray 8 x 8 casserole dish.

Cook spaghetti.  I have a Fasta Pasta Cooker that is incredibly quick.  Since this dish is finished in the oven, I cooked my spaghetti at 100% power in the microwave for nine minutes.  Typically, I cook it for 12 minutes.

While the spaghetti is in the oven, brown the hamburger; drain any fat.  Sprinkle with seasoning salt.

I wasn’t sure why the recipe called for seasoning salt; the spaghetti sauce has seasoning in it.  Oh well, I used it.

Pour spaghetti sauce into browned hamburger and stir well.

Mix ricotta with egg and butter.

By now, the spaghetti is cooked, so carefully remove it from the microwave and drain water off.

Place one spoonful of spaghetti sauce and meat mixture in the bottom of casserole dish.

Top with half of the spaghetti.

Place half of the ricotta cheese mixture on top of spaghetti.  Spread all over to the corners as well as you can.

Top with most of the remaining spaghetti sauce and meat mixture.  Save back a spoonful.

Place remaining ricotta cheese mixture on top.

Spread remaining sauce on top.  Slice up fresh mozzarella and scatter on top of casserole.

Spray foil with PAM spray so that it won’t stick and cover casserole dish with the foil.

Yum – look at those huge chunks of mozzarella!

Pop into oven for 20 minutes.

Remove foil from top and put back into oven for 20 more minutes.

Remove from oven and let sit for five minutes before slicing and serving.
